Work has officially commenced on a €20m upgrade of the Trim Water Treatment Plant, a project that promises to secure and enhance the water supply for more than 12,000 residents in Trim and surrounding areas.

The project will address operational issues at the plant and water quality risks, as well as safeguarding water supply for homes and businesses in Trim who have frequently experienced disruption from outages.

A sod-turning ceremony held last week marked the beginning of the construction phase. The event was attended by Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr Wayne Harding, local TDs, Senators, councillors, and officials from Uisce Éireann.

Speaking at the event, Cllr Harding highlighted the importance of the project for both the local community and future development.

He said: “The construction of this new treatment plant, and in turn, the provision of a reliable water service is essential to support the economic and social development of the local area. I would like to commend all those involved in bringing the project to this important day and I would like to wish the project team well as they progress this vital water project.”

Cllr Harding said the project represents a significant milestone in the provision of “a more secure and resilient water supply for Trim.”

“This project will support future population growth of Trim and surrounding areas. I welcome the commencement of this essential upgrade project by Uisce Éireann and the benefits it will bring to the community,” he added.

John McElwaine, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, echoed the positive outlook and said: “This project will bring significant benefits to the local community and economy of Trim and County Meath. We are committed to producing a reliable and safe drinking water supply while protecting the local environment and this project is key to that delivery.”

Mr McElwaine added: "Uisce Éireann has, and will continue to, invest in water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the Royal County that will benefit Trim and Co Meath for many years to come. We would like to thank the local community for their support and co-operation as we carry out this work."

According to Uisce Éireann, the upgrade works carried out as part of this project will deliver a secure and resilient water supply, ensuring compliance with current drinking water quality regulations.

As part of the works, the existing treatment building will undergo significant reconfiguration, alongside the construction of new facilities, an administration building, and the installation of solar panels.
