Art museums and auction houses are poles apart. The National Gallery of Ireland (NGI) and IMMA, have a cultural remit. Their job is to collect and care for fine art on behalf of the State and, through their exhibition policy, to make art available to the public.

The remit of an auction house is to sell objects, on behalf of their owners, to the highest bidder. Items of cultural significance pass through their doors, but auctions exist to make money.
